The book, "Read Until You Understand: The profound wisdom of Black Life and Literature" is a thoughtfully developed analysis of how Black authors use language to reveal the depth, breadth, and complexity of ordinary Black life. Griffin does not exclude herself from the analysis, for the book is carefully crafted around deeply significant events that shaped her life. So the book is in part, memoir. She is a masterful wordsmith, and the book has to be read more than once to fully understand its layered meaning and significance to the African American canon.
